I have served with the San Francisco Police Department for over 25 years, with primary duties since 2005 focused on traffic enforcement, collision investigation, and collision reconstruction. I have been part of the Traffic Company’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) for more than 15 years—initially as an Officer and, since 2012, as a Sergeant. In 2013, I returned to the Traffic Company as a lead investigator responsible for the investigation and prosecution of minor and major traffic collisions, vehicular manslaughter cases, vessel-related fatalities, and Cal/OSHA non-traffic-related fatal incidents.
I have completed hundreds of hours of advanced training in collision investigation, collision reconstruction, vessel collision investigation, auto–pedestrian analysis, and forensic mapping. I have participated in multiple crash study programs involving the controlled crashing of cars, trucks, and motorcycles, gaining valuable empirical data and firsthand insight into vehicle dynamics and impact behavior. I am fully trained in the use of total stations and laser scanners and have applied these tools to forensically document and analyze traffic collisions, crime scenes, officer-involved shootings, homicides, and detailed damage profiles on vehicles and vessels. I also have extensive training and experience in imaging and analyzing Event Data Recorders (EDR), having conducted hundreds of EDR downloads on passenger vehicles. My reconstruction background includes more than twenty years of experience, including the investigation of over 1,000 traffic collisions, numerous fatal collisions, as well as serving as the lead investigator in more than 400 cases.
I have been qualified and testified as a subject matter expert in collision reconstruction, forensic mapping with total stations and laser scanners, and video analysis for speed estimates. I have testified in numerous criminal trials, civil depositions, and federal court proceedings.
In addition to investigative duties, I have extensive instructional experience. I have served as an instructor for Basic Traffic Collision Investigation (POST) at the San Francisco Police Academy; taught Basic Accident Investigation for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency; and taught Intermediate and Advanced Collision Investigation (POST) for the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office.
My professional credentials include accreditation through the Accreditation Commission for Traffic Accident Reconstruction (ACTAR) since 2011. I have been a member of the California Association of Accident Reconstruction Specialists (CA2RS) since 2011 and joined the National Association of Professional Accident Reconstruction Specialists (NAPARS) in 2023.
