In 1999, Gerard Murphy retired from the Massachusetts State Police after 27 years of service with that Department. At the time of his retirement, he was assigned to the Training Division and retired at the rank of Lieutenant.
As a Trooper in 1981 he was placed in charge of the newly created Crash Reconstruction Section within the Massachusetts State Police. In 1986 Mr. Murphy was one of eighteen persons selected by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to work on developing minimum training guidelines for crash reconstructionists. A recommendation from that group was the establishment of some form of certification criteria for crash reconstructionists. Since that time, the Accreditation Commission for Accident Reconstructionists (ACTAR) has begun this process. Mr. Murphy served as the first representative to ACTAR from the International Association of Accident Reconstruction Specialists (IAARS), leaving that post in 1994.
Gerard Murphy is a recognized expert in motor vehicle crash reconstruction and in 1998 at the invitation of the Department of Transportation for the Provincial Government of Taiwan, participated in a three-day crash investigation workshop for police officers and transportation professionals of that country. Currently, Mr. Murphy is a past president of the International Association of Accident Reconstruction Specialists (IAARS) and is also a former member of their Board of Directors, serving from 1983-1993.
As well as providing services as a consultant in the field of Crash Reconstruction, Mr. Murphy also joined the Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM) adjunct faculty staff in 1983 where he has participated in the development and presentation of instructional units in various levels of traffic crash investigation.
In addition to the completion of numerous police training courses, Mr. Murphy has a B.S. degree in Law Enforcement and a M.A. degree in Criminal Justice.
