Accident Reconstruction

Primarily railroad derailment & railroad crossing accident
reconstruction. Tom is an ACTAR certified (ACTAR #1517) accident reconstructionist. qualified in transportation and vehicle industries (train, yard, railroad shop accidents as well as some automobile/truck cases)

Metallurgical Engineering / Failure Analysis

Complete investigation of component failures and determine root cause. Metallurgical process engineering for forge shops, foundries, diesel engine component suppliers, and other material-intensive industries

Railroad Litigation / Product Liability

Engineering consulting in a wide variety of railroad
litigation and product liability cases dealing primarily with locomotive or equipment failures for
both plaintiff and defense.

Expert Engineer & President

Thomas E. Johnson, P.E.

Mr. Johnson holds a B.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Minnesota and is a licensed professional engineer. In addition, he is a certified accident reconstructionist (ACTAR # 1517).

In 1997, Tom Johnson founded the engineering consulting practice of Railroad & Metallurgical Engineering, Inc. He has nearly 50 years of engineering experience as an expert witness, metallurgical engineer and engineering department manager in the following industries: 40 years in railroad, 3 years in trucking, 3 years in automotive engineering, and 5 years in steel making.

Mr. Johnson is a member and leader in numerous professional technical societies & associations. In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate level classes, Tom also makes presentations at professional engineering conferences.
